JOB TITLE: Tiwa Instructor

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Implements, coordinates, and teaches the TIWA language and culture and protocols according to
the established curriculum and lesson plan approved by Tribal Government. Students may
include preschool, K-12, and adults.

may be found or assigned to this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develops and implements lesson plans based on approved curriculum.
Utilizes various methods of teaching and resources to motivate students in learning TIWA language.
Instructs youth and adults in the language of their heritage and with knowledge of traditional customs.
Provide language enrichment activities and homework for students to carry out at home with families and tribal members.
Practices oral language skills daily to provide consistency in hearing, repeating words, and phrases. Listens to conversations in TIWA.
Prepares weekly progress reports for students to determine progress and identify and provide assistance for weaknesses.
Assesses monthly lesson plans to improve effectiveness of teaching and resources.
Assists and instructs teachers in head start with incorporating TIWA language and customs into classroom.
Engages students to take part and participate in their development of learning TIWA.
Maintains an accurate inventory record of equipment and supplies.
Prepares reports of progress for Tribal Government.
Assists with other educational programs.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED. Associate’s Degree preferred. Two years teaching experience.
Tiwa speaking required. Valid New Mexico driver’s license with ability to meet Pueblo’s liability insurance requirements and maintain eligibility for insurance. Must be able to pass drug test and
background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
Knowledge of language and educational practices, methods, and practices.
Knowledge of TIWA language and customs.
Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
Skill in teaching language to students.
Ability to teach in the native language of Tiwa.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
Ability to supervise and ensure a safe learning environment for young children.
Ability to respond to emergency or crisis situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and
talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee occasionally is required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in a classroom setting with a moderate noise level where employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors, hazardous material and infectious disease. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
